The Ghent Centre for Digital Humanities (GhentCDH) makes the digital dreams of researchers come true. Researchers in fields such as history, archaeology, or linguistics can no longer do without customized software systems. Upon their request, the developers at GhentCDH build collaborative databases, visualization tools, public-oriented science communication platforms, and other web-based systems.

 

  • Your task is to strengthen the team of developers at GhentCDH, primarily for front-end web development work. Initially, help is needed for developing platforms to make annotations on historical texts.
  • Later, you will take responsibility for all technical aspects of projects, for which you will be supported by experienced GhentCDH developers.
  • You serve as a contact point for researchers and contribute to the functional analysis and software architecture to efficiently meet project requirements.
  • You evaluate and use existing open-source tools and libraries, publish code as open-source software, and actively contribute to open-source software.
  • Part of your role includes further developing your skills through courses, self-study, or conferences abroad.

 

Your profile

 

Knowledge and Experience

 

  • You have a master’s degree, will graduate in the upcoming academic year or can provide proof of equivalent experience. The degree is preferably related to computer science (e.g., Master of Science in Computer Engineering, Computer Science).
  • You have demonstrable experience, knowledge, or can quickly familiarize yourself with the following topics:
    • Front-end development with modern frameworks such as Vue or React;
    • Various programming languages such as Typescript and Python;
    • Development of user-friendly interfaces (UX);
    • Experience with version control using Git and modern software development practices (CI);
    • Basic Linux system administration and containerized development (Docker);
    • Integration of front-end and back-end (Database technology);

 

Skills and Attitudes

 

  • Ability to work in a team and communicate efficiently.
  • Ability to take initiative and have problem solving skills.
  • Interest in working with art, heritage, historical sources, and the humanities.
  • Proficient in reading and communicating in English. 
  • Knowledge of or a willingness to learn Dutch.

 

Admission requirements

 

  • You hold a Master’s degree 
  • OR you hold a bachelor's degree and have at least 5 years of relevant experience 
  • and you submit a transcript of your degree. For diplomas awarded outside the European Union, a certificate of equivalence (NARIC) must be submitted before the start of the job

What we offer

 

We offer a contract of indefinite duration in function class A with a salary in accordance with the UGent salary scales 7.1 to 9.2, determined by your relevant experience at the level of the position.
