YOUR TASKS

The Department of Economics at Ghent University (Belgium) has a vacant position for post-doctoral researcher (‘post-doctoral assistant’) in the area. We are seeking a highly motivated economist with a strong background in international macroeconomics, international trade, and econometrics to join our academic team. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in microeconometric methodologies, particularly in applying them to macroeconomic issues, including sectoral production networks and firm-level strategic interactions. The successful applicant should be prepared to contribute to cutting-edge research on the effects of industrial policies, network econometrics, and strategic competition between firms, and have a strong commitment to teaching and publishing in top-tier journals.

The Department encourages international candidates to apply. The working language in most department activities and in our master programme in economics is English.

  • At least 70% of your assignment will be spent on academic research, targeted at publications in highly ranked peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • You fulfill other tasks, depending on your profile and own interests. This may include:
  • contribution to education at the Bachelor's or Master's level, e.g. as a (co-)teacher for a course related to your expertise, or as a supervisor of students in the context of exercises, and their Bachelor's or Master's thesis.
  • support for initiatives to strengthen research in the department, e.g. through the guidance of PhD students, or through the acquisition of external research funding.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • The degree requirement needs to be fulfilled at the start of your appointment and not earlier than 30 September 2021
  • For diplomas awarded outside the European Union, a certificate of equivalence (NARIC) must be submitted
  • You have already conducted research within the field of Economics or a closely related discipline relevant for the department (https://www.ugent.be/eb/economics/en/research).
  • You have distinguished yourself as a promising researcher in your doctorate
  • You are profoundly interested in coaching students in the Bachelor’s, Master’s and/or Advanced Master’s programmes
  • You may present relevant scientific publications in (inter)national peer-reviewed academic journals that are widely disseminated
  • Recommended are:
    • International mobility, in particular related to research stays at institutions external to the one where you acquired your PhD;
    • Proof of efforts to professionalize education, e.g. by participating at training programmes for didactic skills.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a temporary appointment for a period of 3 years. The appointment cannot be renewed
  • Even if you have already been appointed earlier (whether or not at another university and whether or not in the same field of discipline) in a first term of up to 3 years, you can apply. The second appointment does not have to be immediately connected to a first term
  • Your appointment will start on 15 november 2024 at the earliest
  • Your remuneration will be determined according to salary scale AAP5. More information about our salary scales
